The initial starting point for Field to Fork stemmed from Jacky’s family trade of greengrocers and growing up with an appreciation of the importance of seasonal produce. The artwork looks at the provenance of the fruit and vegetables we eat, current environmental challenges and key information about the carbon footprint of the production, transportation and consumption of this fresh produce.
Intrigued by the contrasts in the scales of production, Jacky has looked at the vast acres of covered production for produce such as tomatoes and strawberries. In the UK there are approximately 190 hectares of green houses or 355 football pitches growing tomatoes using state of the art technology. Worlds apart from the diversity of the produce and environment of the 300,000 allotments which yield about 215,000 tons of fresh produce every year. She has used a linear steel structure suggesting fields and greenhouses and poly-tunnels. These support panels with collages of statistics, maps, and graphs; these are etched, enamelled and pierced on and through their surfaces to create shadows conveying the ephemeral delicacy of the subject.
